the 10th century BC "12
Ionian Cities" Samos, Khios,
Miletos, Priene, Ephesus, Teos,
Erythrai, Priena, Klazonemi,
Lebedos, Phokaia, Colophon,
Smyrna, were established and
reputed for the most developed
cities of that age |

It
is near the port of Kusadasi.
It was built by the vizier Okuz
Mehmed Pasha and was restored
1966. It is an Ottoman Castle
built for sea trade. |

Ephesus
is considered one of the
great outdoor museums of Turkey,
in fact perhaps of the world. It
is located on the south of
Izmir's Selcuk county. The links
of Ephesus with the Amazons and
the myths had survived
throughout history. |

VI was the first pope to
visit this place in the 1960's.
Later, in the 1980's, during his
visit, Pope John-Paul II
declared the Shrine of Virgin
Mary has a pilgrimage place for
Christians. It is also visited
by Muslims who recognize Mary as
the mother of one of their
prophets. Every year, on August
15th a ceremony is organized to
commemorate Mary's Assumption. |

The
Christians in the early
empire, were in a dispute with
the Roman state over the subject
of the imperial cult, according
to which, those Christians who
refused to sacrifice animals at
an imperial temple. |

Priene |
The
origins of this beautiful
city are old indeed. By the
eleventh century B.C. it was one
of the twelve colonies forming
the Ionian Confederation and
enjoyed considerable prestige
and prosperity |

Miletos,
modern Balat, is fifteen
kilometers away from Priene. It
is on a hillside surrounded by
large ports at the mouth of the
river Maeander at the head of
the gulf of Latmus. Now the sea
is far off, silted up by the

close to the sea and praised by
tourists and Turks on holiday
